How Peel Regional Police Uses Fleet Telematics to Improve Fleet Readiness and Public Safety
Peel Regional Police is one of Canada’s largest municipal police services and operates a 1,100-vehicle fleet that is essential to public safety. Manual odometer entry and limited visibility into driving behaviour made it difficult to manage fleet health, utilization and operating costs with confidence.
Working with Mobilizz and using Geotab fleet telematics, the police service reported saving 100,000 litres of fuel in 2025 and redirecting $2 million originally earmarked for marked patrol vehicles to other capital priorities. Daily vehicle health reporting also helps its maintenance team identify vehicles requiring attention and make informed decisions about returning them to service.

the challenge
Peel Regional Police had to keep a large, operationally critical fleet healthy and deployable while improving the quality of the information used to manage it. With 1,100 vehicles supporting public-safety operations, limited visibility could affect maintenance decisions, vehicle allocation, cost control and readiness.
Before telematics, the service had limited visibility into officer driving behaviour. Odometer readings depended on officers entering the mileage when they fuelled at police fuel pumps. Manual entry created a risk of inaccurate data, making it harder to build a timely, reliable view of fleet use and condition.
The team needed better information to support maintenance, fuel management, and vehicle allocation while keeping vehicles available for public safety operations.
why telematics for prp
Telematics became essential because Peel Regional Police needed reliable, timely data to keep 1,100 vehicles healthy, understand how they were being used and make evidence-based operating and capital decisions.
takeaways for fleet managers
For fleet managers, IT directors, and police leadership, the Peel Regional Police experience offers a practical starting point: define a measurable operational problem, evaluate it through a focused pilot, and use the findings to guide decisions.
Unnecessary idling, vehicle health, and fleet utilization are useful areas to assess. The right priorities depend on your service’s operating requirements and the information your team needs.

The Solution:
operational confidence
For Peel Regional Police, managing 1,100 vehicles required clear visibility into vehicle health, maintenance needs, and daily use. Working with Mobilizz, the service gained information that helped its teams identify vehicles requiring attention, prioritize maintenance, and make informed decisions about returning vehicles to service.
“We developed reports using Geotab data, and the results were incredible. In 2025 alone, we saved 100,000 litres of fuel.” –
Mark Figueiredo, Director, Materials Management, Peel Regional Police
That confidence also extended to how the service used its resources. Peel Regional Police reported saving 100,000 litres of fuel in 2025 and redirecting $2 million in planned patrol vehicle funding to other capital priorities. These results gave leadership a stronger foundation for fleet decisions and clearer evidence to explain how public funds were being used responsibly.

RESULTS
100,000 litres of fuel saved in 2025
Peel Regional Police developed reports using Geotab data to support its fuel management efforts. In the case study, the service reports saving 100,000 litres of fuel in 2025.
The result shows how a focused telematics initiative can help a police service connect vehicle activity with practical opportunities to reduce fuel consumption.
$2 million redeployed to other capital priorities
Geotab utilization data revealed that some marked patrol vehicles were not moving on a significant number of days during the month. That visibility helped identify underutilized vehicles and opportunities to redeploy them.
The resulting decisions allowed $2 million originally earmarked for marked patrol vehicles to be redirected to other capital priorities. This was a reallocation of planned capital funding, separate from the fuel savings reported in the video.
Better daily fleet-health decisions
Each morning, the fleet team reviews its state-of-the-nation fleet health report. The report brings together critical diagnostic information and highlights vehicles requiring immediate attention. The in-house maintenance team then assesses those vehicles and determines whether they can safely return to service or require further repair. This gives the team better visibility into maintenance priorities and supports proactive resource allocation.
Evidence for transparent decision-making
Fleet data also gave Peel Regional Police a stronger basis for conversations with its Police Service Board and elected officials. Rather than relying on assumptions, the service could use operational information to explain vehicle use and spending decisions.
The case study connects fleet management with the responsibilities at the centre of policing: keeping officers safe, serving the community, and using public resources responsibly.
